What’s Your Child Or Teen Doing Between 3pm And 6pm?
What’s Your Child Or Teen Doing Between 3pm And 6pm?
One study found that 4 out of every 10 boys who bullied others as kids had 3 or more convictions by the time they turned 24. For children in the 6th through 10th grade, nearly 1 in 6 or 3.2 million are victims of bullying every year.
.7 million children bully other children. 38% of suburban counties and 12% of rural counties in the U.S. report gang activity. Preventing 1 child from adopting a life of crime saves over $1,700,000. ($1.7 million dollars.)
When the school day is done today, millions of children will leave the safety of the classroom and head to their home neighborhood. They have no constructive activities to engage in or adults to supervise them.
Research tells all of us that the hours from 3PM to 6PM are the peak hours for our teens to commit crimes, be victims of crime, be in or cause a car crash, smoke, drink, use drugs or engage in sexual activity.
A study conducted by Northwestern University shows us that for children ages 10 through 17, the hourly percent of serious violent crime committed by juveniles on school days, including murder, violent sexual assaults, robbery and aggravated assault was highest at 3PM. This is the most dangerous time for our children.
More than 7 school age children in every 10 are in households where both parents or the only parent are in the workforce. On a regular basis, 14 million children and teens are left unsupervised by adults after school.
The best way to combat the problem is through high quality early education programs, prevention of child abuse and neglect, after school programs for children and teens. If parents are more proactive in early childhood development programs, this will protect our children and save lives and keep parents and children from ever experiencing this horrible crime and so many cases death.
These crimes happen everyday and everywhere in all walks of life. It doesn’t matter if you live in a nice neighborhood or not.
Remember, most child molesters have never been caught.
Don’t wait until your child or teen becomes a victim or disappears before you do something about this ever growing problem!

Great Post, Daryl. My kids are a little bit older, but I never, ever stop worrying about them when they are not at home. I like that you include the older kids here because it’s not just elementary school children that bullying affects. It’s kids of all ages.

Daryl,
These are some great points about keeping your children safe within the “Trouble hours.” Having 5 kids I’m always looking out for their safety. I’m very fortunate that my wife works only part time and she’s always home when the kids are getting out of school.
I was a latch key kid from the first grade on. I always had to call in as soon as I got home, but I could still do what I wanted for a couple hours. I must admit I did get in a little trouble now and then but not too much. However I could not imagine having my younger kids walking home by themselves.
Thanks for spreading the word about this issue. More people need to hear this.

Thank you Ken for your compliments and interaction. Congratulations on having 5 children, wow I couldn’t imagine.
No matter how careful and protective we are, more than 95% of cases, child molesters are known by the parent and the child. Most parents are not informed of the latest tactics that these predators are using.
It doesn’t mean that parents are inadequate, it’s just that child molesters have their own websites and chat rooms and they share information with each other, how not to get caught. Lets don’t ever underestimate them.

Daryl,
This is such an important subject. Most parents today are forced to make a decision between being home for their families or being at work to support their families. None of us would ever think of leaving small children home alone, but teenagers are left on their own every day.
One of my missions in life is to help parents to find ways to become financially self sufficient, to enable them to be home with their families. I’ve had the great fortune to be able to work from home and have a great sense of peace of mind knowing where my kids are and what they’re doing after school. It’s incredibly liberating!
